There are four versions of Her: the
original demo version,
the version from the First Album,
from the Unwired E.P.
and a "new"
version. The
original version of Her comes from a demo session recorded at
the house in Tennyson Road, Kilburn, London in December
1992. In May
1993, they
recorded the studio/album version, with a long spanish guitar
intro, maracas (Dave) and trumpet by Terry Edwards.
In June 1993,
they recorded a different, acoustic version, for the Unwired EP,
renamed She. In this version there is piano but no
drums/electric guitar/bass/maracas nor trumpet. In December
1993, the demo
version from 1992 was released on a Danish compilation, a free LP
and CD given away with the fanzine ADventure #11 (Guilding
Lights JEWEL 11). It has a short bassline intro instead of the
guitar intro. In March
1994, the fourth
(not third) incarnation of this song, the 'new version', was
released on the Volume 9 compilation CD/LP: no intro, no
trumpet. In august 1998, the
demo/original version of Her was officially released on the
Donkeys 92-97 compilation. It sounds much better and louder than the
version on the Danish CD from 93, probably because it was remastered.
And finally... in April 2004,
the original version of Her is re-released on the Working for
the Man compilation. It sounds even a bit better and
crisper than on Donkeys, probably because it was remastered
again (re-remastered?).
Traditionally, Dickon
plays 'surf guitar' on Her, but there are a couple of live
versions (including the one on the Coliseu dos Recreios CD) in
which Dickon plays violin and not guitar... and they
sound great too.
