Q: What do Jism, E-type Joe, Tye-Dye, El Diablo En Ojo, CF GF and Chilitetime mean?
A: Jism: slang term for semen;
E-type Joe:
The Jaguar E-Type is a beautiful old sports car. What this has to do with the song (and who Joe is) we'll never know...;
Tye-Dye:
Tie-Dye is a way of dyeing clothes popular in the 60s. You tie the cloth together so the dye doesn't get to all parts of the surface, untie and re-tie so the next color gets to different parts etc... In the end you get something very colorful and psychedelic-looking;
El Diablo En El Ojo: this is Spanish and means: The Devil In The Eye;
CF GF: it’s the chord progression the song is based on;
Chilitetime: this is a reference to the 70's American soul group called The Chi-lites. They also have an album called Chi-litetime, released in 1976. back
Q: In which movies and tv series can I listen to Tindersticks music?
A: Seems like Tindersticks have an affinity to movies – the list is quite long:
They've performed the title song to the BBC series The Sins, a cover version of a Four Tops song called What Is A Man. The soundtrack also includes Desperate Man.
Tiny Tears was played twice during the Sopranos' episode #12 , Isabella, first aired on 28 March 1999, in which Tony is deeply depressed and having hallucinations. Ballad of Tindersticks (Ballad - NY) was also played on the same episode! In the French movie Intimacy, A Night In is being played at the very beginning, during the opening titles.
El Diablo En El Ojo is part of the soundtrack of the movie Dream With The Fishes, from 1997 and directed by Finn Taylor. Tindersticks have also made the entire soundtrack for two movies by French director Claire Denis: Nénette et Boni and Trouble Every Day. Dickon Hinchliffe, the violinist, has cooperated with her for the soundtrack of another movie, Vendredi Soir (Friday Night) (before you ask, there's no soundtrack out for this one). back
Q: How many videos did the Tindersticks release and where can I watch them?
A: The band has produced 11 videos so far, you can now watch nine of them on the Bareback DVD. No More Affairs and Dying Slowly are the two videos not included on Bareback. For more info about the videos, have a look at the VIDEOS page. back
Q: Is it true that Stuart's sister burned down their house as described in My Sister?
A: No. My Sister is a totally fictitious story and was written by David Boulter, the keyboarder. Stuart does have a sister, tho. back
Q: What are the side projects and collaborations Tindersticks members have been involved in?
A: Dickon worked with Perry Blake,
arranging and conducting the strings for his album California.
David worked with Beth Orton.
David Boulter and Dickon Hinchliffe have collaborated with French singer Jean-Louis Murat for his album called Lilith, arranging the organ and string sections on a few of the songs. The band worked with Chris Eckman and Carla Torgerson from The Walkabouts, performing two songs on their solo album Chris&Carla: Life Full Of Holes.
Stuart worked with Les Hurleurs and performed a song on their last album, Blottie.
Al has got his own sideproject, a band called 3Head. The style of the music hasn't got anything to do with Tindersticks. Neil occasionaly plays guitar with a band called Dirthole. In 2004, Dickon did the strings arrangements for a Mercedes TV ad that used a
Rammstein
track and created
the score for an american film, Forty Shades of Blue. Dickon has collaborated again with Jean-Louis Murat on his album Mockba/Moscou (released on March 2005), which features piano, keyboards and string arrangements by Dickon on three tracks.
Stuart has collaborated with Yann Tiersen, singing one song (A Secret Place) on Tiersen's new album, Les Retrouvailles, released on 23 May 2005. Stuart has also recorded his solo album, Lucky Dog Recording 03-04, having worked with the american producer Mark
Nevers
and the french musician
Thomas Belhom. Stuart's solo album will be released on 13 July 2005. back
Q: In which songs can I listen to Dickon (and other members) singing?
Dickon sings on his own on: Until the Morning Comes, Sweet Memory and I Want You; with Stuart on: Say Goodbye to the City, Trying to Find a Home, Can Our Love, Sweet Release,
Chilitetime, What Is A Man, Trouble Every Day, People Keep Comin' Around, Can We Start Again?, If You're Looking For A Way Out, CF GF and El Diablo En El Ojo. Mark Colwill is the narrator in Harry's Dilemma. You can hear
